Sono un uomo piuttosto anziano. La natura della mia professione, negli ultimi trent’anni, mi ha portato ad aver contatti fuor del comune con ciò che si direbbe un interessante ed alquanto singolare genere di individui, dei quali fino ad ora, ch’io sappia, nulla è stato scritto: mi riferisco ai copisti legali, ovvero agli scrivani. In gran numero ne ho conosciuti, sia per pratica di lavoro che a titolo personale, e, quando volessi, potrei narrare svariate storie, che forse farebbero sorridere le persone benevole, e forse farebbero piangere le anime sentimentali. Ma rinunzio alla biografia d’ogni altro scrivano per pochi momenti della vita di Bartebly, che fu scrivano, il più stravagante di quanti abbia mai veduto, o di cui abbia avuto notizia.
